SUMMARY:Opening Doors: Advancing Consumer Control Through HCBS Systems Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:Register \n\n\n\nFriday\, September 19\, 2025; 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. Eastern \n\n\n\nThis interactive workshop will explore how Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) systems advocacy directly supports the core services of Centers for Independent Living (CILs). Participants will learn how advocating within the HCBS system opens doors to greater consumer control\, community living\, and independence for people with disabilities. \n\n\n\nThrough real-world examples from different states\, the session will highlight successful strategies for engaging in HCBS systems advocacy—including participation in the public comment process\, consumer advisory committees\, and other community-driven initiatives. Presenters will share how their programs sparked conversations that increased access\, improved quality of services\, and ensured that the voices of disabled people are centered in policy and planning. \n\n\n\nParticipants will leave with practical tools\, ideas\, and inspiration for advancing HCBS advocacy efforts that align with Independent Living philosophy and strengthen consumer leadership. \n\n\n\nASL and CART will be provided. Please contact Mary-Kate (Mary-Kate@ncil.org) or Jessica (Jessica@ncil.org) with any questions or accommodation requests. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is funded by the Grassroots Project. The Grassroots Project is a national effort to support disability grassroots advocacy. This project is administered by Human Services Research Institute with funding from the Administration for Community Living. The purpose of the project is to build effective advocacy networks and leaders to support high quality policy design and implementation.
