Prairie Independent Living Resource Center, Inc. (PILR) in Hutchinson, Kansas is seeking to fill the position of Executive Director. PILR first opened in January of 1997 and was operated as part of Topeka Independent Living Resource Center until it became its own private Non-Profit entity in June of 1998.  At that time, PILR employed 6 full-time and 1 part-time staff members.  Since then, it has increased services to consumers by expanding to 3 more offices in Dodge City, Pratt, and Newton.  PILR currently provides services to consumers in 60 counties across Kansas with programs including: Independent Living, Older Kansans Employment Program, Vocational Rehabilitation/Payment for Performance Job Placement Services Contract, End-Dependence Kansas Initiative Contract, Economic Employment Support Services Contract, Older Individuals Who are Blind, Telecommunications Access Program, Work Opportunity Reward Kansans, Disability Mentoring Day, and other programs and events.


The Executive Director at PILR is responsible for the development and general management of the

Non-Profit organization. This full-time position reports to the Board of Directors, oversees the day-to-day operation of the organization, is responsible for carrying out duties that will allow the office to be run in an efficient and effective manner as outlined, and ensures PILR services are delivered in accordance with the Independent Living Philosophy.


  • Assure that all staff are trained in the Independent Living Philosophy
  • Coordinate the hiring and training of new staff
  • Oversee all day-to-day operations, Direct Services, and other activities of the agency
  • Oversight of PILR’s IT equipment and technical processes
  • Ensure that all processes are completed in relation to consumer satisfaction surveys so that results can be reported to Board of Directors
  • Assist staff who may be facing challenges or need assistance with troubleshooting


  • Work effectively with board members/committees/staff and the community at large
  • Provide strong leadership while instilling leadership skills in others
  • Oversight of strategic plan
  • Oversight/participation in sound policy development and enforcement
  • Represent PILR at local and state meetings/events
  • Oversight of the organization’s community services, events, and media releases, and ensure that all the above listed are accessible to those with and without disabilities
  • Advocate the mission and vision of the organization as broadly as possible
  • Serve on applicable boards and coalitions


  • Development, submission, and monitoring of grants
  • Develop, locate, and/or expand revenue streams that align with PILR’s mission and vision
  • Approve  payroll and payables, oversee monthly invoicing, and other financial matters
  • Provide required fiscal and program reports on center activities to the Board of Directors
  • Oversee PILR’s fiscal operations including engaging an independent auditor for the annual GAAP audit,  financial reports, annual budget preparation and oversight
  • Preparation of the annual report and delivery to the state/SILCK
  • Maintain expansion of PILR’s capacity
  • Oversight/Approval of Newsletter
  • Review monthly grant/contract invoices, monthly/quarterly programmatic reports, and financial statements
  • Other duties as assigned

Technical/Skill Requirements

  • 2 years of experience using Windows based PC
  • 2 years of experience using QuickBooks, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access applications
  • 2 years’ experience working with people with disabilities
  • Must be able to multi-task
  • Must have experience providing supervision, preparing budget reports, grant-writing, public speaking, and organizing community activities
  • Dependable, organized, and self-motivated
  • Possess the ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Knowledge of standard formats for letters, memos, and reports
  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of work plus experience in a related field
  • Believe in and promote the Independent Living Philosophy

Preferred Qualities

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, collaborate with staff, consumers, CPA firm and others
  • Experience working with people with disabilities
  • Accurate record keeping skills and attention to detail
