2021 ANNUAL REPORT NCIL: National Council on Independent Living ABOUT NCIL 2021 BOARD & STAFF YEAR IN REVIEW TRAININGS FINANCIALS SPONSORS ABOUT NCIL NCIL is the longest-running national cross-disability, grassroots organization run by and for people with disabilities. Founded in 1982, NCIL represents thousands, including: individuals with disabilities, Centers for Independent Living, Statewide Independent Living Councils, and other organizations that advocate for the human and civil rights of people with disabilities. Mission: NCIL advances independent living and the rights of people with disabilities. Vision: NCIL envisions a world in which people with disabilities are valued equally and participate fully. A Message from the Executive Director Dear Advocates and Friends, In spite of significant challenges posed by the pandemic, Centers for Independent Living (CILs), Statewide Independent Living Councils (SILCs), and individuals with disabilities continued to demonstrate how creative we can be. CILs and SILCs developed new ways to deliver services. They continued partnering with consumers to lead the systems advocacy that is so essential to transforming our communities. And NCIL continued to support the Independent Living network through some of the most challenging times ever experienced by people with disabilities in this country. In 2022 and beyond, NCIL needs your participation to help win full equality for people with disabilities. Please join us or renew your membership at ncil.org. The conference theme was Liberty, Independence, Freedom, and Equity. These four concepts represent the pillars of the work we do. We missed being together in person, but NCIL was still able to accomplish all we gathered to do. We hosted an outstanding virtual Rally and Day on Capitol Hill, elected board members, adopted an important resolution opposing Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), and hosted over 25 workshops to provide education and peer support. Since 2018, the Barrier Removal Fund has provided over $1 million in grants to fund accessibility improvements at healthcare providers in twelve states (Hawaii, Louisiana, Iowa, California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, and Texas). In 2021, the Barrier Removal fund provided over $380,000 in grants to remove access barriers in healthcare provider offices in Hawaii, Iowa, and Louisiana. We also worked with the CILs in these three states to complete accessibility site reviews at 28 provider offices. NCIL and the KU RTC/PICL Home Mods Fact Sheet NCIL produced the Home Mods Fact Sheet in partnership with the University of Kansas Research and Training Center on Promoting Interventions for Community Living (RTC/PICL) to share home mods data and resources with CILs, along with promising practices and real world examples from several CILs with successful home modification programs: accessABILITY in Indianapolis, Indiana; The Ability Center of Greater Toledo in Ohio; and Placer Independent Living Resource Services (PIRS) in Auburn, California. In Memoriam In 2021, the disability community mourned the loss and celebrated the lives of Adonis Brown, Marilyn Golden, and the thousands lost to the pandemic. TRAININGS Elevate Webinar Series Image: Elevate Logo – Campaign Training for People with Disabilities NCIL hosted the Elevate: Campaign Training for People with Disabilities. Elevate is a nonpartisan campaign training program to promote running for office and campaign work for people with disabilities. The series covered a broad range of skills and resources on core campaign skills such as fundraising, voter outreach, and building a brand as a candidate. - In 2021, Elevate trained over 50 people with disabilities to run for office or work on a campaign. - Elevate is the only campaign training with CART captioning, ASL, and screen reader accessible materials for all content. The webinar recordings and materials are available online, free of charge to anyone who wants to use them. - Elevate 2021 featured speakers including Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley and Pennsylvania State Representative Jessica Benham. - Our sponsors included ActBlue and Run for Something. Thank you! I'm a disabled woman with ADHD who has been preparing to run for office for many years now. I've been through several candidate schools but I've got to say that Elevate had me in tears of joy and radical self-love several different times. It was the most inspiring program. I loved the guest speakers and it was so exciting to be part of the first and only candidate school designed to encourage disabled folks to run and represent our interests in elected office.
