ADA / Civil Rights

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), enacted in 1990, is a landmark legislation that has transformed the landscape of civil rights for individuals with disabilities in the United States. The ADA aims to eliminate discrimination and ensure equal opportunities in areas such as employment, education, transportation, and public accommodations. By affirming the rights of individuals with disabilities, the ADA empowers them to participate fully in society and live independently.

The Independent Living Movement, which gained momentum in the 1960s and 1970s, laid the groundwork for the ADA and continues to shape disability advocacy today. This movement promotes the belief that individuals with disabilities have the right to live independently and make choices about their own lives, free from societal barriers. Centers for Independent Living (CILs) emerged from this movement, providing crucial resources, advocacy, and support to help individuals achieve greater autonomy.

NCIL continues to advocate to protect the ADA and advance civil rights of people with disabilities.
